Unless You’ve Owned One Of These 7 Cars, You’re Not A Rapper

Even if you’re not a hip hop fan, you know that the flashy music videos revolve around the hottest girls, the sickest mansions and the most luxurious cars you’ve ever seen.
Whether it’s an old school whip like the C-Class in Hov’s “Big Pimpin’” or the iconic Rolls-Royce Phantom in Snoop’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” video, rappers are known for having some of the flashiest cars in the game.

As a matter of fact, there are some cars that won’t be seen anywhere but in music videos. Stretch Hummer limos, Benz’s sitting on 24s, you name it.

It’s not about what you’re saying, it’s about what you’re driving! Every true MC should be able to say they’ve had at least one of these cars. Here are the whips you need to have had the keys to in order to ever call yourself a rapper.
Let’s start with the Mercedes-Benz S550. Sure, you see them everywhere — mostly blacked out — but it’s no secret that DC native Wale was the one to introduce the 550 to the rap scene when he dropped the 600 Benz music video featuring the boss Rick Ross. Sure, it’s an S550 in a song called 600 Benz but it’s all basically the same thing according to Wale. The awesome thing about the Mercedes-Benz S550 is that it’s appropriate for any situation from music video sets to dinners to award shows.

Next up, the third-gen Dodge Challenger SRT. Bet you weren’t expecting us to mention this one but you’d be surprised. Believe it or not, Wiz Khalifa put muscle cars on the rap map.
Remember the infamous bumble bee Challenger that was flaunted around by the Pennsylvania rapper in The Kid Frankie video? Well, let’s just say the hip hop community wasn’t necessarily against the American muscle. You can go ahead and thank Wiz for that!

On a quest to move on to bigger and better things, we’re brought to the Rolls-Royce Phantom. This car has been seen everywhere but it’s no secret that the English chariot was delivered to the hip hop community by Snoop and Pharrell in the “Drop It Like It’s Hot” visual.
After this video dropped, it was on. Every rapper needed to have a Phantom or you just weren’t Elite. The Phantom is one of the most desired foreign cars in the in game – even now. They’re exclusive, they’re luxurious and the ladies love them!

Speaking of luxury — the Maybach 57s. You can thank the boss Ricky Ross for this one. It’s no secret that Ross was able to convey the Maybach brand into the game with various music visuals back then and even now.
I mean, what do you really expect from a guy with a label named Maybach Music? If you’ve never been driven around in one of these, you’re not an Elite rapper. Other MCs that are known for hopping out of these include Kanye and Jay-Z.

Do you mind if we take a few steps back in time just to snatch the keys and hop into the 4th generation Mercedes-Benz SL. ATL rapper Ludacris is the one to be held responsible for this trend. The foreign beauty was showcased during the video for “Rollout,” one of Ludacris’ most notable hit records. The song was pretty much centered around, well, rolling out! If you didn’t have one of these sitting in the driveway, you just weren’t doing it.

Curren$y is known for his car-themed records where he talks about owning old school cars to new school cars. Or sometimes even rapping about how he’ll one day get to push a Lamborghini. It’s always cool to see a rapper’s progression.
In the recent video for Showroom, Curren$y showcases his new toy — the Ferrari 360 Spider. A lot of people questioned the fact that he didn’t just get a Ferrari 458 Italia but Curren$y is a man who knows what he wants in life.

There’s nothing wrong with going back in time when you’re able to afford your dream car. If you see someone pull up in one of these, you’re guaranteed to stop and stare. Seen in plenty of music videos, the Ferrari 360 Spider rightfully earns its spot as one of the top cars you need to have owned to be a rapper.

This list wouldn’t make any sense without us mentioning the rapper car of all rapper cars — the Cadillac Escalade. If you have ever owned one of these, you can go ahead and write your Grammys speech now.
I’m pretty sure this SUV has been shown in almost every rap music video we’ve ever seen but I remember it from Mike Jones’ Still Tippin’ video featuring Texas MC Paul Wall and Slim Thug. It doesn’t matter if you knew who Mike Jones was or not. You knew you need to have that Escalade.

All in all, the cars that were showcased in this infamous music videos really convey how flashy the industry can get when it comes to hip hop music. Of course there are the cars that we’re all seeing now such as Ferrari 458 Italias and Lamborghini Aventadors but those are no fun! This is about the cars that helped pioneer what luxury really meant one frame at a time.
