Nigeria - Lagos Targets Guinness Record For Tooth Brushing

As part of plans to mark the 2012 World Oral Heath Day, the Lagos State Government seeks to make the Guinness Book of Records by simultaneously engaging 300,000 students in a tooth-brushing challenge.
Speaking at a joint world press conference held on Wednesday, in Lagos, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Yewande Adeshina, said the adolescents would be congregated at different locations across the state to make history.
Meanwhile, the clock is ticking and the countdown has begun to a minute of tooth-brushing that starts at noon on December 5, 2012.
Adeshina said the challenge was aimed at improving the attitude of Nigerians to oral health.
“We came up with this idea because we are convinced that a preventive educational approach is more effective in terms of costs and outcome than the traditional curative approach we presently practice,” she said.
“This project does not just aim at breaking the world record but to provide vital health information to adolescents while providing a research line for future oral health planning."
Stressing the importance of dental hygiene, Adeshina said that failure to take care of the mouth could lead to various diseases, including those related to the heart.
She, however, congratulated the youths that are set to be part of the programme on the history to be made for state and the nation, in advance.
In addition, Adeshina also disclosed that the state government would introduce preventive dental care programme in its Primary Health Care Centres from October this year.
She added that the pilot programme would kick off in two Primary Health Care Centres, before being replicated across the state.
Also speaking on the initiative, the event's project head, Dr. Bakare Lawal, said it was put together by some young dental professionals, with support from the State Ministry of Health and the Nigerian Dental Association.
He added that the 300,000 students to participate in the exercise, would be drawn from about 300 schools in the state.
"In that moment in time, united across differences in background and opportunity, they will create a world record and a memory to treasure for the rest of their lives," he said.
In her reaction, Dr. Lola Agbaje, State chapter, Nigerian Dental Association Chairperson, expressed confidence that the exercise would create a platform to bring public attention to oral health.
Agbaje stressed the need for regular visits to the dentist, at least twice in a year.
