SOUTH Korea has pledged to expand development assistance to Africa and enhance cooperation on the continent.
Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister, Kim Sung-hwan said his country’s development assistance to Africa would be increased this year and pledged to offer more support in various sectors.

Mr Kim said this at the close of the third Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (KOAFEC) forum at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

President Michael Sata addressed the forum at the invitation of his South Korean counterpart, Lee Myung-bak.

He said in 2005 South Korea contributed more than US$42.4 million while in 2008 the support was increased to $107.1 million
in Africa.

“As promised at the last forum three years ago, South Korea has sent over 1,000 volunteers to Africa and this assistance will be increased this year,” he said.

Mr Kim also said South Korea had made efforts towards maintaining peace on the African continent.

The KOAFEC forum was held under the theme ‘Sharing Today and Shining Tomorrow’ and was co-hosted by South Korea and the African Union.

The forum addressed an “inclusive growth” that makes it possible for member countries to attain economically and environmentally sustainable growth that provides a platform for policy makers to build on the existing cooperation.
