Nigeria Revokes Registration Of 28 Opposition Political Parties

Nigerian election officials on Thursday slashed the number of political parties in the country by half, revoking the registration of 28 small opposition parties that did not hold any seats in parliament.
"In the exercise of the powers conferred on it by the 1999 constitution, as amended, and the Electoral Act 2010, as amended, the Independent National Electoral Commission has today... de-registered" the parties, the agency said in a statement.
Election officials gave no reason for the move.
The de-registered parties had not had an appreciable impact on recent elections, but some, including the socialist People's Redemption Party and leftwing Nigeria Advance Party, had been in existence for some 30 years.
Presidential and general elections are expected to be held in 2015 in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and top oil producer.
