Nigeria - President Goodluck Jonathan Sacks Aviation Chief

Nigeria's president Goodluck Jonathan on Monday night approved the immediate removal of Harold Demuren, director-general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) from office, a statement said on Tuesday.
The statement, released from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said removal of the aviation chief takes effect from Tuesday but no replacement has been made following the sack.

"The removal followed a careful consideration of Demuren's unsatisfactory response to the numerous concerns of stakeholders in the aviation sector," the statement said, adding that the Nigerian president wished him well in his future endeavors.

Before the terse statement announcing his sack on Tuesday, it was obvious Demuren's days in office were numbered following a tragic plane crash which claimed 163 lives on June 3, 2012, in southwest Nigeria's Lagos State.

The sack of the embattled aviation chief was recommended by a Joint Committee on Aviation set up by the upper and lower Houses of the Nigerian national assembly. The committee had indicted Demuren in its probe concluded on Dec. 19, 2012, blaming the air crash on negligence by the regulatory authorities and recommending the dismissal and prosecution of the aviation chief.

The Nigerian national assembly considered and adopted probe report of the committee, therefore, recommending the removal of Demuren from office by the president.

As of Tuesday morning, no announcement had been made on the successor of the aviation chief.
