1 Killed, 68 Seriously Injured In South Africa Bus Collision

Two buses collided in South Africa on Saturday, killing one person and seriously injuring 68 others.
The accident took place on the route R36 in the northeastern province of Limpopo at around 10:30 am local time as the two buses collided with each other, leaving 100 people injured, the South African Press Association quoted local paramedics as saying.

One bus came to a stop following crashing down the embankment, and the collision left a child dead and 68 others seriously hurt, said the Limpopo transport official Kwapa.

One of the two buses had been carrying high school children as the collision occurred, said the official.

The critically-injured people were airlifted to a hospital for urgent treatment by a medical helicopter.

The accident was caused by the failure of the brake in one of the buses, said Kwapa.

The three other vehicles hit into each other as they attempted to avoid the crash of two buses.

In recent years, deadly road traffic accidents have become one of the biggest killers in South Africa. On June 25,2012, a bus carrying about 70 passengers plummeted off a bridge in the eastern province of Gauteng, killing at least 19 people and injuring about 50 others.
