Plateau United coach, Patrick Mancha has said the Golden Eaglets suffered a hang-over of their group game loss to the Baby Elephants of Ivory Coast in the final of the 10th Africa Under-17 Championship in Morocco.
The Eaglets lost 4-5 on penalties to the Ivorians after full time score stood at 1-1 on Saturday in Marrakech.
Mancha said the Nigerian lads were erratic in their approach for the larger part of the game which culminated in the unnecessary red card picked by Izu Omega.
“Having lost to the Ivorians in the group game the Eaglets came out to avenge the defeat but somehow their tackles were erratic which resulted in the issuance of a red card to Omega.
“Fine, technique very superb but the psychological impact of the defeat was glaringly all over them and the bench should have stood up to calm them down.
“The team did well same as the bench but it’s not yet uhuru as the coaches need to work very hard to shape up the team for the world challenge in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“The coaches must instill it in the players not to worry or bother themselves about the opposition but must work on their character, discipline, psychology and confidence,” the former Nigerian playmaker said to supersport.com.
Mancha disapproved of penalties shootout as a format for deciding champions even as he carpeted Eaglets’ midfielder, Chidiebere Nwakali for his sorely missed spot kick.
“I’ve always viewed penalties shootout as a wrong format to determine winners. However, I don’t know what Nwakali was thinking, he was too casual with his kick not minding the magnitude of the responsibility on his shoulder.
“I pray he overcomes the psychological trauma and behave better in future if given another opportunity,” he said.
The new African champions, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Tunisia and Morocco will represent the continent at the Fifa Under-17 World Cup in UAE in the months of October and November.
