Opinion - Celebrities & Social Media: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Social media has become the driving force behind the behaviors of Generation-Y for quite some time now.
Every meal ingested or party attended can now be “instagrammed,” “tweeted,” or “facebooked.” With the ever-expanding media platforms, it should come as no surprise that celebrities are at the forefront.
They have monopolized on the realization that this is the most interactive way to connect to fans. However most of the time, their VIP lifestyle can be overbearing and irritating.
Really LiLo you needed to check in at the gym? We’ve seen what you’ve been looking like lately and that check-in isn’t fooling anyone.
The majority of these celebs have been using their clout for meaningless postings, with the sole goal of attracting more fans. These celebrities are under the impression that if they have numerous “followers,” their influence will be monumental. Unfortunately, they tend to confuse audience with influence. I’m sorry Kourtney Kardashian, but the Dragon Roll you just instagrammed is not going to get me to watch your atrocious reality show.
Recently, Amanda Bynes has been making her online presence felt through a variety of irrational tweets. We thought she was one of the few childhood stars that would enter adulthood unscathed, but we couldn’t have been more wrong.
The annoyance felt by her online persona began with the debut of her freshly pierced cheeks (don’t worry the ones on her face). After asking Drake to murder her vagina last week, you can’t help but question the sanity of people’s internet choices. I can only predict a sex tape will surface in the near future.
It is rare for a movie star to use social media to promote humanitarian ideas that do not offer any personal return. However, Scartlett Johansson, a registered independent, took an active role in the most recent presidential political process, using her influential social powers for good.
Unlike many other outspoken celebrities at the time she did not push her personal beliefs, instead she simply set out to encourage young Americans to vote. Her speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) will be sure to resonate in the minds of young adults the next time they approach the polls.
Young Adults prove to be a part of an impressionable generation, and instead of celebrities using this to their advantage, they choose to make themselves look like fools. They have the opportunity to truly influence others and make a difference yet they refuse to discuss anything outside of their social realm.
Celebrities are continuously flooding newsfeeds with ridiculous “selfies” and foolish thoughts, completely unaware of just how obnoxious they are. Think before speaking? How about, think before tweeting. Do you REALLY need to post ANOTHER picture with your dog? And please for the sake of everyone please learn how to use a proper #hashtag.
