A Chechen man was fatally shot by an FBI agent on Wednesday while being questioned about a possible connection with the Boston bombings.
27-year-old Ibragim Todashev was killed just after midnight in his apartment complex near Universal Studios.
“The agent encountered the suspect while conducting official duties,” another agent said. “We do not have any further details at this time. We expect to have more information later this morning.”
Former FBI assistant director John Miller, who currently works for CBS News, said the agent was trying to question Todashev at his apartment over a possible connection to Tamerlan Tsarnaev when “something went wrong.”
Todashev reportedly attacked the agent who then fired his weapon in his own defense.
The FBI had questioned Todashev before, after a friend of his named Khusn Taramiv confirmed that Todashev knew Tamerlan and had talked to him just one week before the bombings.
Todashev met Tamerlan when he was living in Boston and they both trained in boxing and mixed martial arts.
Khusn claims that he and Todashev have been followed by the FBI since the bombings. He says that Todashev is innocent and he has been unfairly targeted because of his Muslim faith.
“He was just a Muslim, that was his mistake, I guess,” Taramiv, also a Muslim, told Orlando TV station WESH.
Taramiv said that Todashec had long suspected that the FBI was going to set him up. Todashev gave Taramiv phone numbers for his father and mother just in case he got “locked up.”
“We had a feeling that a worse-case scenario, that something like [a shooting] is going to happen,” Taramiv told WESH.
Todashev was also arrested earlier this month for aggravated battery when he got into a fight in a parking lot.
