A Syrian official has made the claim that the massive attack on a Syrian military research facility in the early hours of Sunday morning was a “declaration of war” by Israel.
According to CNN, Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al Mekdad said the attack represented an alliance between Islamic terrorists and Israel.
We’re going to let that idea sink in for a minute.
“We do not comment on these reports at all,” an Israeli military spokesperson said.
Faisal al Mekdad said that Syria will retaliate against Israel, but did not specify when or how.
Syria is accusing Israel of firing rockets into the Damascus suburb of Jamraya and striking the military research facility.
An Israeli Army official told CNN that two rocket interception batteries have been deployed to northern Israel.
U.S. officials also believe Israel conducted an airstrike against Syria on either Thursday or Friday, but don’t believe Israeli warplanes entered the country in order to pull off the attack.
Israel has long said that they will not tolerate the transporting of weaponry into countries like Lebanon by terrorist groups, and this alleged attack may be a form of retaliation for smuggling of this nature.
“We are watching everything when it comes to the movement of these types of weapons. We have the means to do that,” a senior Israeli defense official told CNN’s Sara Sidner on Sunday.
