Arsene Wenger is not renowned for splurging on established stars, but according to the papers that is all about to change.
The Arsenal boss is set to throw £62 million at signing three players this week, smashing the club’s transfer record in the process.
Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan and Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender are all set to join the Gunners, according to the Daily Mail.
After years of frugality and off seasons consisting of the best talent from the club being sold on, Arsenal fans will be hugely relieved by the reported transfer spree.
If anything actually comes of it, that is.
But the newspapers are not to be told otherwise this morning as the Mail proclaim that Argentina forward Higuain will be “the most important transfer of the summer at around 25m”.
Wenger is understood to be desperate to bolster his midfield with Gundogan, rated at £20m, the number one target for the Frenchman.
Leverkusen’s £17m-priced Bender is also on the cards now for Arsenal, who shipped out ineffectual winger Andrey Arshavin to lighten the wage bill.
The Russian was a record £15m transfer fee back in 2009.
