People may consider the weekend to land on different days due to their work schedule, but one country is looking to wholeheartedly redefine when the weekend is.
Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah announced on Sunday that Sunday is the new Monday, and weekends will now consist of Friday and Saturday.
This announcement of this new weekend may seem a bit rushed, as it will begin this Friday, June 28, shifting from the country’s traditional weekend of Thursday and Friday.
The shift in the weekend is not without a purpose, as it is being done to align the country’s weekend with that of the other five members of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Such a move will provide many economic opportunities for the country, including opening up its $400 billion stock market to foreign investors.
According to a statement by the national news agency SPA, the decision is “for the sake of putting an end to the negative effects and the lost economic opportunities consistently associated with variation based on workdays between local departments, ministries and institutions and the regional and international counterparts.”
Friday is a part of the weekend for many Muslim nations, and therefore is not part of the workweek in most Muslim countries.
The only two countries remaining with a Thursday-Friday weekend are Afghanistan and Yemen.
