The Edward Snowden saga continues to get weirder by the day, now with a Swedish sociology professor nominating the NSA whistleblower for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Stefan Svallfors recommended Snowden for the Nobel Peace Prize to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, praising him for his “heroic effort at great personal cost.”
Svallfors believes awarding Snowden with the Nobel Peace Prize could “save the prize from the disrepute incurred by the hasty and ill-conceived decision” to give the 2009 award to Barack Obama.
Svallfors believes it is important to recognize that Snowden has reminded us all that “individuals can stand up for fundamental rights and freedoms.”
“This example is important because since the Nuremberg trials in 1945 has been clear that the slogan ‘I was just following orders’ is never claimed as an excuse for acts contrary to human rights and freedoms,” Professor Svallfors wrote.
While many agree Snowden deserves consideration, the head of the International Committee of the Russian State Duma Aleksey Pushkov says the U.S. won’t allow Snowden to receive the award.
“Not in a million years will the United States allow Snowden to get the Peace Prize. But his nomination is significant. Many in the West see him as a champion of democracy,” Pushkov tweeted on Monday.
Is Edward Snowden deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize or are his actions reprehensible?
