Naked Man Pictured Running Through Manchester Found Dead At Bottom Of Lift Shaft

Body found at the bottom of a lift shaft three days after naked man was spotted "looking lost" in city bars and restaurants.
A man seen running naked around a city centre has been found dead at the bottom of a 50ft lift shaft.

The man - in his 20s - was seen sprinting around the trendy Northern Quarter in Manchester wearing nothing but socks and trainers on Friday night.

He was pictured and filmed by many revellers on mobile phones. Onlookers said he appeared confused.

Police were called after a body was found yesterday afternoon on a construction site.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “At no point did officers actually see the man.

"However, due to the death occurring after police contact, the response has been mandatorily referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”

A post mortem examination will take place later this week to establish the cause of death.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

The body was recovered at a building site where developers are working on a 70 bed apartment complex.

Detective Inspector Brian Morley said: “This is a tragic case where a man has lost his life after apparently falling into a lift shaft and our thoughts are with his family at this time.

“Our work now is concentrating on the minutes leading up to his death.”

Police believe the man had been in various bars in the area and have found a bag containing clothing and a passport.
