Andrew Moore had raped a 12-year-old girl and served six years in jail - his former partner Heidi Mahon has waived her right to anonymity to speak out.
A mother who was raped and strangled by the father of her child after she discovered he was a convicted paedophile has spoken of her ordeal.
Andrew Moore thought he had erased all traces of his vile sexual history when he began a relationship with Heidi Mahon.
But she was horrified to discover Moore, 62, had raped a 12-year-old girl and served six years in jail, so she confronted him.
Furious that he had been unmasked, and fuelled by drink and drugs, Moore raped Heidi, 42, and threatened to kill her.
A week later, he attacked her with a knife, throttled her and crowed over her battered body: “You’re lucky I’ve not done worse. I’ll kill you next time.”
Heidi has bravely agreed to waive her right to anonymity to speak out.
Describing the second attack, she said: “He suddenly became very aggressive. It was terrible. He was so violent I thought I was going to die.”
Her injuries were so severe she spent a week in hospital in Oldham, Greater Manchester.
Moore was jailed for 12 years on Friday at Manchester’s Minshull Street crown court after a jury convicted him of rape, wounding and assault.
It followed a 10-day trial during which Heidi was forced to testify.
After the hearing, Heidi, who met Moore in 2009 and had a baby with him, said: “I feel strange about the sentence, both relieved and sad. It was the thought of protecting other women and girls that
helped me carry on, I couldn’t stand the thought of others suffering.
“Going through the trial was horrendous. I’m just glad it’s over. But there are still so many unanswered questions – how could he do this when we loved each other?
“Social services told me about his convictions. I was horrified. I’d had no idea. It was terrible. He had hidden it all from me.
“I had such low self-esteem, which is why he was able to control me. He had hidden his past so well, it didn’t seem to be the man I knew. Now if a man makes a sudden movement I jump and I still get flashbacks.
“During the hearing I felt violated and degraded all over again. I think other women should come forward if they have been a victim of rape or violence. Men like him need to be put away so other vulnerable women are out of harm’s way.
“This will live with me for ever. I can try to bury it but I know it will always be there.”
Moore from Llandudno, North Wales, had been jailed in 1995 after raping and indecently assaulting a 12-year-old girl.
Judge Mushtaq Khokhar told him on Friday: “If one looks at the overall picture one sees that you were the dominant force in the relationship. During the violence and strangulation, she felt she was going to die. It seems to me you present a danger to members of the public.”
Moore is on the sex offender register for life.
