Nigerian Police present N16m cash to families of 16 slain officers

The police command in Borno State, Northern Nigeria on Thursday, presented N16m cash to families of 16 policemen who died in May after suspected insurgents attacked Ngala, headquarters of Gamboru-Ngala Local Government Council in Borno.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Alhaji Lawal Tanko, presented the cash at a ceremony in Maiduguri.
The police boss said the money was donated by the Borno State Government to provide relief to the affected families, pending their death benefits’ release.
Tanko said “this is a sad moment to us. We are here to witness the issuance of N1m cash donated by Borno government to each family of the 16 policemen who died during an insurgent attack in Gamboru-Ngala.
“The state government felt it is wise to provide some relief to the families of the fallen heroes to lessen their hardship, pending when their death benefits will be released.
“Fortunately, the Inspector-General of Police had already directed the immediate payment of the benefits to the families.”
He assured that the command was determined to ensure the success of the ongoing war against terrorism by putting in more efforts.
He said, “I want to assure that officers and men of the command are determined to continue the fight against terrorism and insurgency no matter the cost.
“We will continue to discharge our responsibilities without hinderance.”
The commissioner also presented N200,000 to each of the four policemen injured during the attack.
He commended the state government for the numerous support to the police, saying, “the Borno government had been very supportive to the command.
“I wish to thank Gov. Kashim Shettima for the gesture.”
He also commended the I-G, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, “for introducing numerous welfare packages for police.
“The packages had helped in boosting the morale of officers and men toward performing their duties.”
