A little over a week after North Texas was ravaged by a series of devastating twisters, a gigantic two-mile wide tornado ripped through the suburbs of Oklahoma leaving 91 dead including 20 children, 7 of whom drowned in a pool of water at their school.
Rescue workers are still searching for the 24 students (aged between five and eight) of Plaza Towers Elementary who went missing after the school was completely destroyed in a horrific 45-minute period of pure chaos.
Another elementary school, a myriad of homes and a hospital were also among the buildings ripped to shreds by the 200 mph winds that turned Moore, Ok., a town of roughly 50,000 people, into a post-apocalyptic warzone.
At least 240 people are injured, 60 of which are children. These numbers are expected to rise as more missing people are being lifted from under the rubble at this very moment.
Although Briarwood Elementary was also entirely flattened, all students were accounted for.
Rescue teams and members of the National Guard reported to hear cries for help from beneath the rubble of Plaza Elementary that came to a frightening halt a few hours later.
Parents had to walk for miles down streets filled with broken wood and crumpled cars to reach their children. The seven children confirmed dead were killed by massive amounts of water from punctured pipes that piled up underneath the rubble.
Also among the 20 dead children are a three-month-old baby and a four-year-old.
Authorities told local news stations that 101 have been rescued from underneath the wreckage.
Among these 101 are traumatized elementary school students who were transported by a human chain.
Officials said there were at least 75 people in Plaza Elementary when the tornado hit. The 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students to a church before the twister reached the school. One teacher said she had laid her body across six children to protect them.
Pope Francis tweeted his sympathies: “I am close to the families of all who died in the Oklahoma tornado, especially those who lost young children. Join me in praying for them.”
