Three US teenagers have been held over the shooting of an Australian baseball star who was gunned down in an apparently random drive-by shooting.
The 15, 16 and 17-year-old suspects allegedly posted a message on Facebook indicating they were planning a killing spree before they shot dead Chris Lane in Duncan, Oklahoma, last Friday.
Police investigators reportedly found a post on one of their pages, which read: "Bang. Two drops in two hours."
Duncan Police chief Danny Ford said that Lane had run past a house where the teenagers were gathered, according to Fox News.
"They followed him, I can’t reason in my mind what their thought process was," he said.
"They wanted to be Billy Bob Badasses.
"I think they were on a killing spree.
"We would have had more bodies that night if we didn't get them."
Lane was shot as he jogged through a wealthy area of the small town after visiting his girlfriend Sarah Harper.
Sarah posted an emotional tribute on Facebook, calling their four years together "the most amazing of my life".
"I love you so much babe," she wrote.
"From 2009 until forever you will always be mine and in a very special and protected place in my heart."
Mr Lane, a talented sportsman who was originally from Melbourne, was studying in the US having won a baseball scholarship.
His father, Peter, said the family was devastated by the loss of a "sensational kid", according to Fox News.
"He was just an athlete going out for a run.
"According to police, it was just a completely random drive-by shooting.
"He was a very talented athlete, he was a very talented junior footballer as well.
"He picked baseball because it gave him a chance to go to college."
The three suspects could face first degree murder charges, which carry a potential death penalty in Oklahoma.
